July 2016

This tour is suitable for persons who wish to experience our coastal excursions but do not want to do any dune 4x4 driving.

This excursion commences every morning at 08h15 at the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 office at the Waterfront in Walvis Bay. Alternatively, this tour is also offered in the afternoons, departing at 12h15 and may be combined with a morning dolphin and seal cruise offered by our sister company, Catamaran Charters.

After a stop at the Walvis Bay Lagoon to see masses of flamingoes and other seabirds, the drive takes us to one of five RAMSAR sites (Ramsar site no. 742) in Namibia. We pass a tidal lagoon consisting of adjacent intertidal areas, which supports varying numbers of wetland birds (37,000 to 79,000 individuals); some species such as flamingos occur in impressive numbers. Eleven endangered bird species are regularly observed. Human activities consist of recreation and one of the largest salt mines in the world. From here we proceed to the Pelican Point Peninsula, a unique stretch of land dividing untouched beaches of the Atlantic ocean on the one side from the Walvis Bay lagoon on the other, and providing shelter to the best naturally protected harbor on the southwest African coast.

We stop for a photo opportunity at a ship wreck before heading to the point and its old rusted Jetty, about 800 metres from the lighthouse, standing guard over the lagoon. Your guide will provide you with fascinating history and facts of the Pelican Point lighthouse, early marine navigation and the ever-changing peninsula. During a short stroll in the shallow waters along the beach, your guide will point out a variety of seashells, crabs and other beach inhabitants. We subsequently serve hot coffee and tea with a selection of snacks right on the beach. On a clear sunny day the dunes of the Namib Desert can be observed, while ships and boats on the Lagoon provide a perfect backdrop to create special memories of this unique place. Pelicans and flamingoes often round off the idyllic picture.

You will be guided to Pelican Point’s cape fur seal colony, which is home to about 60,000 cape fur seals, a variety of seabird as well as black-backed jackal.

We will proceed along the beach to donkey bay, a world famous surfing beach frequented by professional surfers during exceptionally high seas. From there we head inland to the Kuiseb river delta, a dry riverbed where the odd springbok may still be seen. The route will take us past the area’s typical fauna and flora. Animals which have developed ways to adapt to the desert include the black-backed jackal, fog-basking beetle, dancing spider (‘white lady of the Namib’), golden mole, shovel-snouted lizard, palmato gecko, springbok, oryx, brown hyaena and ostrich. Endemic to the central Namib Desert, the !Nara plant has adapted well to the desert: Its tap root can reach more than 15m into the ground to reach water resources and they have no leaves to lower loss of water by transpiration. The !Nara can live to over a 100 years and is a member of the cucumber family.

Along the way we will stop briefly for a glass of sparkling wine and some tasty Namibian oysters, before arriving back at the Walvis Bay Waterfront at around 12h00 for the morning excursion or at 16h00 for the afternoon excursion.

Ulf, Bruno and the TEAM wish you and yours, a wonderful and joyous festive season, and thank you for your support during 2015. Here is to an even better 2016.

We extend a hearty welcome to our new reservationist, Victoria Shiavena, who started with us at the beginning of November. She gained her experience at the Burning Shore, Langstrand.

The renovations of all guest rooms, including the new bathrooms are all completed.

To ensure our continued high standard our house keepers completed a 3-day refresher course.

Terry Jenkinson, well-known chef from Windhoek, put together new menus in conjunction with our kitchen staff. The focus is now on Namibian cuisine in a modern style.

With kind regards, Astrid & Alf Walter

Another year came to an end and what a successful year it was for Kupferquelle Resort. We had a high occupancy due to the successful marketing campaign for 2015, which puts Kupferquelle way above our expectations.

On the 2nd of October the project was handed over to the contractors. We will start with the construction of the 20 new standard chalets, as well as a 2nd swimming pool at the chalets for our guests’ privacy in October 2015. Our convenience store will be enlarged and we are also going to enlarge our laundry, as well as adding a new dry cleaner for the public. A new hotel school is also on the cards. We are already busy upgrading our campsites, but are still going to add additional ablution blocks for our campers convenience. The Olympic-size swimming pool is still undergoing renovations and will be completed in December 2015. Necessary steps will be taken to prevent any disturbances to our guests.

We would like to wish all the best to the Finesse team to their future business ventures.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!!

From Kierie & Elize Bruwer and Kupferquelle Team

Okahandja Country Hotel wants to thank all their loyal clients for all your support in 2015.

We will be closed from 13 December and will re-open again on 11 January 2016.

We will answer our emails as usual during this time, so your bookings are more than welcome.

May you have a peaceful, productive and blessed holiday season and may 2016 be the best year ever.

Ikus & Bianca Conradie and team, Okahandja Country Hotel

The Namibian summer is now coming and due to the arid climate in the area of Sesfontein the rainfall will be moderate. An average rainfall of 100mm per year, falling between October and March in the late afternoon or night, do not affect the lodge business. We had some 3mm during October.

Humans, animals and vegetation feel the high temperature of 35°C with its dryness, but our guests coming from dark and cold Europe enjoy the light and heat and spend their time relaxing by the pool.

Good news - we have now fitted half of our rooms with air-conditioning!!

Another attraction are our safaris into the Hoanib river with open safari vehicles. This time of year gives excellent sightings of our African wildlife, especially the desert-adapted elephants and lions. We have also purchased a new 10-seater 4x4 for our guests’ comfort.
Our excursions lead you into untouched Africa and offer you unique experiences with free range elephants, lions and rhino. We guide you to 1000 year old rock engravings and take you to visit the Himba tribes in their traditional villages located throughout the Kaokoveld.
Our management team, Gideon, Clementia and Zedekias, run the lodge and take care of your guests. With personal service, fresh draught beer, good wines and a daily changing 4-course menu they and their team offer a friendly atmosphere, where you feel right at home. Enjoy the special ambiente of the historical fort.

The Fort Sesfontein team is looking forward to welcoming you.

We would like to advise you of the following important dates:

  • 30.12.2015 – 3.2.2016 Namtib will be closed for renovations
  • 21.5.2016 – 1.7.2016 Namtib will be closed for annual holiday.

Wishing you a wonderful festive season.
Linn & Thorsten

The new self-catering unit was finished recently and consists of two twin rooms with a shared bathroom containing a bath and a shower.
Furthermore we would like to remind you that the lodge is a solar-run facility and therefore cannot be equipped with normal air-cooling facilities. Water coolers and fans are however available for the comfort of guests.

Frikkie and Hilde thank you for the support shown throughout 2015 and wish you all a safe and relaxed festive season.

We would like to introduce the new management couple to you: Riaan Beeslaar (Born Namibian raised in Polokwane) and Charmaine Beeslaar (born and raised in Cape Town) were employed at Camp Chobe, Ngoma, Zambezi Region as a management couple for about 4 years.

Charmaine worked on a wine farm in Wellington prior to moving to Namibia and Riaan was running his own small glass and gas installation business. Not having any formal education or training in hospitality we were given this opportunity at Camp Chobe and learned the industry and operational logistics around running a lodge. We thoroughly enjoyed it and welcomed the new challenge and change of scenery offered by Kalahari Game Lodge.

It has been about 4 months since we started at KGL and we enjoy every moment especially the amazing Kalahari Lions.

News just in: the owners and management are in the process of introducing buffalo and lion into the Uukwaluudhi reserve within the near future. This will be an awesome addition to the game already on the property. We will be keeping you updated on the progress, and once the first animals arrive at Uuukwaluudhi. Once this is in place night drives will be added to the activities at the lodge. Exciting times lie ahead!

April 2015

(Friday 24.04.1998 to Friday 24.04.2015)

His Excellency, Dr. Sam Nujoma, the first State President of Namibia, officially launched the Lüderitz Nest Hotel on Friday 24th April 1998.  During these last 17 years, the hotel has welcomed and hosted Namibia’s other State Presidents, Prime Ministers, international and national guests, the media, Ministers, VIPs, regional governors, officials, business leaders, and during the last few years, the world’s leading champions in wind and kite surfing.

The Lüderitz Nest Hotel has played and continues to play a pivotal role in the promotion of Lüderitz as one of Namibia’s TOP10 TOURIST DESTINATIONS. Since its launch, the hotel has won many awards including the PMRAfrica Diamond Arrow Award for NAMIBIA TOP RESORT HOTEL. The hotel also contributes, directly and indirectly, to many local community projects aimed at the disadvantaged.  The idea behind the hotel was the brainchild of well-known Namibian hotelier Tom Mutavdzic and cleverly designed by Architect Deidré de Waal who ensured that all 70 rooms and 3 luxurious suites enjoy direct sea views.

Ulf Grünewald (HAN GM of the Year 2012) has been managing and motivating his team of friendly professionals from the 16th May 1998.  Along with Tom, Ulf was very much involved with the construction of the hotel.

A big THANK YOU to all our travel trade partners, media and suppliers, friends, local, regional and international guests for the fabulous support you have given us during the last 17 years. Without ALL your valuable support, we would not be here – here is to the next 17 years!
